Greek Genocide

PontosWorld.com has started a poll asking you the reader, whether the term 'Pontian Genocide' is correct. Was the genocide in the Pontus region an isolated event? Or was it part of a wider systematic plan to rid the Ottoman Empire of all its Greek inhabitants? Is it time Greeks worldwide, united and chose a single term to describe the events of 1914-23? Or should they remain divided and thus keep confusing the world community? You will find the poll at the bottom right of our Home Page . Greeks currently commemorate 3 Genocides. The Thracians (April 6), the Western (Asiatic) Asia Minor Greeks (Sep 14), and the Pontian Greeks (May 19), each commemorate their genocides on separate days and have named their own respective genocides. In some cases, the names widely vary, with Holocaust, Hellenic, Pontian, Pontian-Greek, Smyrna, Asia Minor and a multitude of other terms used to describe the events. On the other hand, Armenians commemorate The Armenian Genocide (on April 23) each year. The Assyrians commemorate The Assyrian Genocide (on August 7) each year. Is it time Pontian, Thracian and Asiatic Asia Minor Greeks swallowed their pride? Should they term the events of 1914-23 as The Greek Genocide, and thus align themselves with the other 2 minorities (Armenians and Assyrians) who were massacred? Would the term Greek Genocide make more sense? Would it reflect the events of 1914-23 more accurately? You decide. The poll can be found at the bottom right of our Home Page and also at the bottom right of our Genocide page .
