The HELLENIC GENOCIDE.

To the Greeks of Smyrna, 87 years after their expulsion

Fanis Malkidis

The rise of Turkish nationalism with the rise of the Neo Turks to power, along with the economic interests of Germany in the Ottoman Empire, led to a systematic persecution of the Greek minority between the years 1913-1924. One million of a total 2.65 million Greeks that lived in the Ottoman Empire in 1914, were murdered thus bringing to an end the multi-century presence of Greeks in the Ottoman Empire.

The final phase occurred during August of 1922. On the 13th of August 1922, a counter attack was launched by Mustafa Kemal who had already signed pacts of friendship and collaboration with Soviet Russia, the three Soviet Republics of the Caucasus, as well as France and Italy. On the 27th of August, the Turks entered Smyrna and began the arson and destruction of the Greek element. George Horton the American Consul General at Smyrna wrote… “nothing was spared with regards to the atrocities, the debauchery, the cruelty and the fury of human passion”. Twenty five thousand (25.000) Greeks were lost in the fire, while between the interval from the 27th of August till the 4th of September 1922 alone, the Turks murdered 50.000 Greeks. On the 28th of August 1922 the Metropolitan of Smyrna Chrysostomos was publicly and brutally murdered, and with him a further 342 clergymen of the Metropolis of Smyrna. They were all tortured first before their eventual murders. The murder and the expulsion of the Greeks, followed the destruction of every trace of Greek presence, something which is symbolic of the fire at Smyrna.

Approximately 1.5 million Greeks were forced to flee as refugees and arrive in Greece, leaving behind them 1 million dead and thousands missing. As Dido Sotiriou writes…“They set fire to Smyrna…hundreds of thousands of people beset by fear, all ran and descended on the shore which now resembled a black river… from one angle it resembled a beach, from another a site for slaughter”. In another of her works she writes, “they were being chased, running for their lives from the Turkish sword and the fire of war. There comes a tragic moment in one’s life when one considers by chance the opportunity to abandon everything they have, their homeland, their past, and to leave, breathless and yearning for some certainty elsewhere. ….One and a half million agonies and economic problems embarking upon Greece with a message written across their chests saying: “Refugees!” ….Without a homeland, without work, without a home….”.

The American Ambassador to Turkey Henry Morgenthau Snr compares the refugees with the 26.000.000 men, women and children who had suddenly and unforeseenly reached the harbours of the USA.

When the Lausanne Conference began on the 1st of November 1922, there were still 300,000 Greeks in Constantinople and her outskirts, as well as Imvros and Tenedos. There were also 400,000 Greek speaking Muslims living in the Pontus region, people who were exempt from the Exchange. The majority left with the ensuing compulsory Exchange of Populations between Greece and Turkey, and the others expelled in 1942, 1955 and 1964, leaving a small number of Greek who today live in the Pontus.

The expulsion of the Greeks by the Neo Turks, and Mustafa Kemal who in particular unleashed his own fury against the Greeks, constitutes one of the biggest crimes in not only Greek history but history in general. .The genocide of the Greeks is a question which has remained on the side lines for many years. It’s a political question which has international relevance with regards to the obligation of states and the international community to acknowledge genocide and in turn repair damages caused.

On the other side, the modern Turkish state must be prepared to acknowledge responsibility in the crime, without resorting to propaganda in denying it. People in general and in particular Greeks who lost thousands of their loved ones, have the right to remember and to demand recognition from the guilty parties for the crimes and injustices that were committed at their expense. .
